Jerry Kalman, an internationally acclaimed award winning fine art photographer, works from his studio in Bonsall, California. In addition to hanging digital images at the Brandon Gallery, he exhibits annually at the Del Mar Fair in San Diego, is published extensively and contributes to several worldwide exhibitions of fine art photography. He serves as a docent at the highly regarded Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego’s Balboa Park.
Getting the most from difficult light situations highlights his unique approach to interpreting landscapes and seascapes, nature scenes and urban geography. “Whether photographing during preferred low angle/warmer light times of dawn and dusk or dealing with undesirable harsh shadows at midday, the image maker must be opportunistic and creative to see and capture scenes in a fresh and desirable way. It’s the hand that circumstances deal us, making it a photographer’s challenge to use available resources for the best interpretive advantage possible.”
Many of his studies are “compendium-worthy,” such as his extensive collection from Bodie State Historic Park in the Eastern Sierra, now the visual cornerstone of a virtual tour about this famous ghost town from the Gold Rush Era. He transformed a life-long interest in urban architecture into a collection of quality photos of lighthouses on both coasts, a recent study of derelict homes and commercial buildings across the country, and a growing body of work featuring restoration sites in the United States (Bodie and the Shelburne Museum in Vermont to name two).
